Bipolar Disorder Brain Chemistry - What Is It and How Does it Help?

Bipolar Disorder Brain Chemistry - What Is It and How Does it Help?Bipolar disorder has a known genetic link, but scientists aren't really sure how much, if any, has to do with genetics and how much with the environment. The best that researchers can do is to discover what sort of environmental factors, if any, are important. Because mood swings are a way of life for many who suffer from bipolar disorder, the study of the subject is being conducted in earnest.People's mood swings are a major part of bipolar disorder, and one theory is that these erratic mood swings may be due to underlying changes in the brain chemistry. Specifically, there may be a malfunction of serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that helps people regulate their moods. Unfortunately, too much serotonin may cause uncontrollable mood swings.Medications are one possible way to address the problem. Both propranolol and lithium have been approved by the FDA for treatment of mood swings, and they may provide some relief. However, these medications carry significant risks for both patients and doctors.Serotonin is involved in many of the body's functions, including those related to pain and mood. There are other chemicals in the brain that also play roles in mood regulation. Perhaps one or more of these chemicals is as involved in the symptom of bipolar disorder as serotonin is. But no one knows for sure. One new theory is that bipolar disorder is not just caused by a lack of brain chemistry, but rather is another facet of the larger nervous system disorder that includes depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post traumatic stress disorder. This theory is supported by a case study of a woman who was diagnosed with both major depression and bipolar disorder at the same time. Her biochemistries were found to be significantly different from normal. She had a deficiency of neurotransmitters and needed special attention to her bipolar disorder. If this serotonin deficiency syndrome is indeed relate d to bipolar disorder, then the treatment is similar to that of patients with depression. Lithium and other antidepressants are used to relieve depression and manic symptoms. Antidepressants have to be taken at regular intervals, and they must be combined with adequate sleep. Lithium must be taken on an as-needed basis and should not be taken with alcohol or any drug that alters its function. Some patients with bipolar disorder will need specialized treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. These treatments may help to restore the brain chemistry necessary for proper mood regulation. In some cases, these therapies will need to be coupled with some form of medication to bring the condition under control.

Les Misérables

Les Misérables The Grace of Redemption: Les Misérables ChaptersThe Misérables StoryProduction NotesThe Most Evocative SongsRecognition of Les MiserablesCreating an engaging musical from classic literary works is nothing new. From that perspective, the stage show based on the work of French poet and novelist Victor Hugo is but one of many musicals. It is a complex story with many elements â€" drama and humour, tragedy and romance… plot twists and parallel lines that make it seem nearly impossible to condense the entire story into a couple of hours and a few songs. The classic novel, though written in the Romantic period when passionate stories fairly littered the literary landscape, was initially not considered for staging by English show writers… that is, until the gift of a music album. The French composing team of Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil had put together an album of songs for their adaptation of Les Misérables, which graced a Paris stage for only three months, in 1980.The initial leap from written word to musical w as that concept album, from which the show derived â€" a complete reversal of the normal order of things. Usually, the show comes first and, based on popular demand, recordings follow. The English-speaking world might not have ever experienced Les Misérables had it not been for stage director Peter Farago gifting producer Cameron Mackintosh the French concept album.Mr Mackintosh, riding the wave of success derived from Cats opening on Broadway, was initially reluctant to embrace Mr Farago’s idea of creating an English adaptation of the French show.Aren’t we all so glad he changed his mind!Your Superprof now transports you back in time to pre-revolutionary France, to a time when a man could be convicted to life in prison for petty theft and women were in turn victimized and stigmatized. As a condition of his release, he must display the yellow ticket that proclaims him an ex-convict everywhere he goes. That visual leaves him shunned by the public and turned away from respectable employment. No decent lodging house will give him room. He finally finds relief from a Bishop who feeds him and shelters him in the church.Jean Valjean, formerly 24601, is embittered by the treatment he receives from society at large and concludes that if he will be treated as a criminal, he must become one to survive. He takes a few silver pieces â€" a chalice and a platter from the church and steals away in the night. When caught, a scruffy, emaciated figure with such riches in his bag, he is auto matically suspect but, upon being dragged to the church by the police, instead of being denounced by the bishop, he is not only validated but rewarded. That redemptive act changes Valjean. When next we see him, he is prosperous and respected. He has cast away the yellow card that indicted him and changed his name, a clear violation of his parole which puts Javert hot on his heels.Even though they now live in the same city, Javert does not recognise Valjean, now cloaked in respectability and fashionable clothing. Instead, a wretched figure thought to be Valjean is arrested. The former prisoner realises this case of mistaken identity could be his ticket to permanently casting away the shadow of suspicion against him but cannot bear the thought of an innocent man being sent to prison in his place. He confesses his identity to Javert but pleads for time to arrange his affairs and those of Fantine, the gravely ill woman whose child will soon be orphaned. The two fight; Valjean then runs away .When he discovers the conditions the child Cosette is kept in and how she is treated, he takes the girl and raises her himself… at a cost, of course. Thénardier would never let his golden goose go free!Set against the larger backdrop of the June Rebellion of 1832, this human drama is as relevant today as it was 200 years ago when it was written. Les Mis holds the record for the second-longest running Broadway musical Source: Wikipedia Credit: Andreas PraefckeProduction NotesAs soon as The Artful Dodger came onstage, Gavroche came to mind â€" Alain BoublilThe French lyricist had been attending a showing of Oliver! in London when the idea occurred to him that he should adapt Victor Hugo’s novel for the stage. All at once he visualised all of the story’s characters, even the seemingly secondary ones such as Marius and Eponine onstage, laughing, singing, crying. He could hardly wait to discuss his idea with composer Claude-Michel. They engaged in a lengthy discussion of character analysis â€" their mental and emotional state and the effect they would have on the audience. They also factored in the political and social climate of the story's era, along with any commentary or remarks that Mr Hugo himself might have made that he had compiled in his source novel. The part of the story when Valjean rescues the prostitute from the an gry client comes directly from Mr Hugo’s experience. He had been on his way to his editor’s office, a respected, quasi-famous citizen, when he saw that very scene play out before him: the rejected customer shoving a handful of snow down the woman’s dress and then pushing her to the ground. She raised her fists to defend herself and the man called for a policeman to charge her with assault. Mr Hugo, having witnessed the whole thing, intervened on her behalf. She became his Fantine and the scene was included in the story and the show.Once Messrs Boublil and Schonberg decided on the particulars, the latter composed the music as each set of lyrics was completed. When the entire work was done, Mr Schonberg sang the entire show, accompanying himself on the piano. The recording was a little more than two hours long.Filling the roles came next.Packing CTS Studios in Wembley with powerhouse vocals such as Rose Laurens (Fantine) and Maurice Barrier as Jean Valjean, they recorded the soundt rack for a show that did not yet exist.Discover the mysteries of The Lion King’s soundtrack…The Most Evocative SongsEnglish songwriters had half their work already done for them. The songs were already written; they only needed lyrics in English.  Herbert Kretzmer did a bang-up job of things, delivering songs that accurately reflected the mood and the actions of the characters. It is important to note that he did not simply translate the French lyrics but one might guess that he took inspiration from them. You can recognise his efforts by the song titles alone.A la Volonté du Peuple (According to the will of the people) â€" Can You Hear the People SingJ’avais Revé D’une Autre Vie (I Dreamed of Another Life) â€" I Dreamed a DreamLa Suicide de Javert (Javert’s suicide) â€" SoliloquyDonnez, Donnez (Give, Give) â€" Look Down, Look DownRouge et Noir (Red and Black) â€" ABC CaféComme un Homme (Like a Man) â€" Bring Him HomeDemain (Tomorrow) â€" One Day MoreL’air de Misere (Th e Air of Misery) â€" On My OwnMâitre Thénardier (Master Thenardier) â€" Master of the HouseMost often, the general meaning of the French lyrics was conveyed in English but sometimes it is completely confounded, such as Bring Him Home, which maintains the essential meaning of the French lyrics but offers a different perspective. Also, take a closer look at how Chicago uses its music to give the story’s characters more depth... Les Mis had nearly become an installation at the Palace Theatre Source: Wikipedia Credit: C. FordRecognition of Les MiserablesThe original French show was a hit!It had been projected to run for a minimum of eight weeks but ran for twice that long.Unfortunately, the venue it played in could not accommodate a longer run. Nevertheless, for its 107 performances, the box office sold nearly 500,000 tickets… and would probably have sold more!To say that this is a most popular piece of musical theatre would be an understatement. Les Mis, as it is known in English-speaking theatre circles, has picked awards up as though hoovering. The West End production picked up the Audience Award for Most Popular Show and Patti LuPone won the Best Actress award for her role as Fantine. It was also nominated in several other categories. The original Broadway show earned multiple Tony Awards: best musical, best book, best score; best actor, best actress, best direction and it even took a Tony Award for best lighting design! That might have something to do with the show’s creative team tightening up production during the move from London to New York; one of the aspects they tweaked was the lighting in the sewers, to make it more dramatic. So beloved is this testimony of the human spirit that, since its opening night in London in 1985, it has run continuously â€" only closing in July 2019.Likewise, it holds the record for the second-longest running show on Broadway.Les Misérables has twice been made into film, has set (and broken) box office records for ticket sales and, according to Playbill, the Les Mis Original Broadway Cast recording is the second most popular cast recording of all time.It beat The Phantom of the Opera to take that spot…Whether you have a thing for revolutionaries or the French Revolution was never your thing, there is no doubt you will find something (everything!) to like about Les Misérables. Now read all about the new Broadway sensation, Hamilton.

Summer Bummer 6 Warm-Weather Dangers for Singers

Summer Bummer 6 Warm-Weather Dangers for Singers Suzy S. Are you paying attention to your vocal health? The summer season presents some unique challenges when it comes to caring for your voice. Learn a few summer tips for singers in this guest  post by vocal  teacher Elaina R Summer is in full-swing! The season of green grass, hot sun, pool parties, and BBQs is my favorite time of year. But as a singer, I also have to watch out for the special hazards that warmer weather brings. While winter is definitely a singer’s roughest season (zero humidity and the flu are no fun), summer holds some unexpected dangers for your vocal cords. Check out my summer tips for singers below, and have a fantastic and vocally healthy summer! 1. Dehydration Hotter weather often means sweat and more time outside, so you have to be extra careful to stay hydrated. Vocal cords are made out of the same soft, moist stuff as the inside of your cheek, and when they don’t get enough water, they become more brittle and susceptible to damage. So be sure to drink plenty of water, not just for your vocal cords, but for your whole body! 2. Allergies Unfortunately, all of the living things that make summer so gorgeous flowers, trees, grass    can also cause allergies. Allergy  symptoms can include  coughing, sneezing, congestion, and a bunch of other problems that inhibit breathing and irritate the throat. One of these issues, post-nasal drip, is particularly damaging to singers because it involves mucus dripping from the sinuses onto the vocal cords, irritating and inflaming them. Many singers (myself included) use OTC medications, nasal sprays, and neti pots to deal with these problems. 3. Amusement Parks Amusement parks can be lots of fun, but they also encourage lots of vocal abuse:  loud talking, yelling, and, of course, SCREAMING on the roller coasters and other rides. Screaming involves slamming your vocal cords together rapidly, and as you might imagine, it isn’t good for you. If you’ve ever found yourself hoarse after visiting an amusement park, you know exactly what I mean. Luckily, I have a sneaky trick that can completely eliminate vocal damage at amusement parks. When I ride roller coasters and other rides, I open my mouth    but I don’t actually make any noise. No one notices, I have just as much fun, and my voice feels great at the end of the day! 4. Smoke I love BBQs and bonfires, but smoke can cause coughing, wheezing, and mucus buildup. Avoiding this one is easy just sit downwind of bonfires, and be careful not to inhale too much smoke while BBQing. You can also volunteer to cut up the watermelon and leave the BBQ to someone else. 5. Concerts Summer brings a wave of outdoor concerts and music festivals. While these events can be a blast, they often involve singing along (usually loudly and with bad technique) as well as yelling and screaming. I bet you can guess my antidote for this one! Just like at amusement parks, I don’t actually make much noise at concerts. I mouth all the words and I look like I’m cheering along with everyone else, but I don’t actually use my voice. I have a great time AND my voice feels great the next day. 6. Air Conditioning While summer air in many climates is nice and moist, air conditioning changes all that. Air conditioning removes moisture from the air, resulting in dry, wintery conditions. This can irritate the respiratory system and cause coughing just like winter air. Air conditioning and fans can also circulate dust, aggravating allergies. To combat this, try not to crank up the air conditioning too much at home. If you spend a lot of time in a highly air-conditioned environment (like an office), you can protect yourself by staying hydrated and using cough drops or a personal humidifier if your throat feels dry. By working these tips for singers into your day, you can enjoy summer to the fullest without harming your vocal cords. Your body and your voice teacher will both thank you. Now get out there and enjoy the weather! They’ll leave the comforting and nurturing environment of primary school and move onto something more serious.A lot of children aren't keen on studying in the same way they do at school. (Source: lil_foot_)The teaching approach is different, too. The days are longer and the classes are harder. They’ve never seen some of the subjects and their timetable’s busier and more demanding. It can sometimes be difficult for children starting secondary school. If they struggle, it can sometimes get worse and worse. They may eventually give up.That doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily end up failing or resitting exams.Hiring a decent private tutor is one of the best ways to help struggling students. Whether they need help with languages, sciences, or core subjects, there are plenty of benefits when it comes t o academic support...Academic Support for LanguagesYour child may have studied a language at primary school. They might even be pretty decent at it. Others may have to start a given foreign language in year 7.  This means that a lot of students may be complete beginners in their foreign language and will have to quickly get to grips with conjugations, grammar, irregular verbs, reading, writing, listening, and speaking. While often disregarded, foreign languages are becoming more and more important. Both struggling and gifted students can benefit from academic support.A specialised academic support tutor in a given language can help any student. Whether you opt for native speakers or a Brit, the tutor can dedicate several hours a week to helping you read, write, listen, and speak French, Spanish, German, Mandarin, etc.One on one tutoring means the child being tutored has more time to practice speaking than they usually would in their normal class. Since you need to be speaking a lot t o learn languages, home tutoring and online tutoring are great options because they don't have to battle twenty other students for a chance to speak like they would in school.See for yourself the support network woven by parents, tutors and students!Improve with Academic Support Tutorials in ScienceIt can be very easy to get lost in the sciences.  Primary school children aren’t often taught about calculus, operations, or algebra. Once they get to secondary school, their maths tuition gets a lot more serious. If a student’s considering doing sciences at A Level, they’ll have to do well in their GCSEs.Academic support tutorials are also really useful for those studying the sciences. (Source: PublicDomainPictures)You can find academic support tutors on Superprof (featuring tutors uk based) who’ve specialised in the sciences.  Whether maths, chemistry, physics, homework help, or academic support, tutors can help any students who are struggling. They can also help students catch up .  If you're struggling to wrap your head around moles, you could get a chemistry tutor to help you with preparation for your GCSE.If you hate geometry, trigonometry, and algebra, a maths tutor is what you need. There are also plenty of science tutors that cover multiple sciences for students who need more general coaching.Improving in Other SubjectsEnglish can become a lot more complicated subject once you get to secondary school. You’re expected to write essays and read novels.  The same is true for history. You have to study everything from ancient societies to modern events. To stay ahead of the curve, an academic support tutor can always help. Students will study core subjects a lot throughout their schooling. They’ll only get more complicated, too. A tutor can help students to revise and get the most out of their learning by tailoring their teaching methods to each student.Homework help is also a great way for kids to get ahead with their studies. There are tutors waiting fo r you.Self Improvement with Private TuitionOne of our tutors  recently wrote a short  article about the difference between having a fixed and a  growth mindset. Sometimes learners get  so caught up in the content of what they’re learning, they forget that it is the attitude, the frame of mind, which is all-important.If you have a negative stereotype about your learning capacity, it will exert a  constant  negative influence  on your chance of success. On the contrary, if you don’t believe that intelligence is fixed or static, then the sky’s the limit.Helping students  undo the harmful attitudes about their learning is  one of the roles of a good personal tutor. It’s also important for tutors to make sure they don’t impose false limits on their students’ abilities. The fixed vs growth mindset is a simple idea, with tremendous repercussions. What About Academic Support for Sixth Formers? While students learn the foundations at secondary school, by the time they reach the sixt h form, they’ll be covering topics in depth. Academic support tutorials offer personalised approaches.  The goal is to help students get the best results they can in their A Levels. This is when students start working towards their careers or try getting into universities. Again, academic support could be the answer you’re looking for.Language TutorialsLanguages are hugely important in the modern world.Of course, even if you’re not applying to a language course at university, your French, Spanish, or German A Level results could make all the difference. It’s a good idea to get help for your child from a tutor. If you want to do well in listening, reading, writing, or speaking a foreign language, you need to practice.Of course, you can also hire an English tutor if English isn't your mother tongue or a tutor that specialised in literature.Academic support tutorials may decide whether you attend your chosen university or not. (Source: Olichel)Humanities and SciencesOnce you get to secondary school, the humanities (foreign languages, literature, etc.) and the sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, etc.) seem to become enemies. You can get tutorials in certain subjects as part of your academic support. This can be really useful if you need certain results in your A Levels to get into university.Academic support is a great idea for students at secondary school.Limitless Academic Support for Higher EducationDoes academic support need to stop once you leave school?Of course not! After school, there’s university! Your results at university can shape your future career. The range of tutorials subjects offered increases once you get to this level. There are plenty of tutors offering academic support in a huge range of subjects such as:Physics, chemistry, biologyMathsEconomics, international businessForeign languagesGeographyEnglishITRegardless of the career you want, you should be able to find a tutor to help you get the results you need.Of course, tu torials shouldn’t be the only studying you do. Although there is a school of thought on educational support being an acceptable alternative to formal schooling, they're supposed to be used alongside your regular studies. Higher education can be particularly demanding. You’ll have to study a lot in order to get a degree or a master’s. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with an experienced academic support tutor to help you out during your studies. It doesn't matter whether you're an undergraduate or postgraduate, the best tutors should be able to help with planning that tricky essay or exam or test prep. You might want to attend a top university like Harvard. (Source: 12019)While we've spoken a lot about one to one tutoring, you can also get instruction in a small group. This can be quite good for languages as you can get a conversation and discussion going with each learner.Find out the expanded list of subjects you could receive tutoring in...Becoming a Private TutorIf you're an educator looking for tutoring jobs, you can create your profile on Superprof today. If you want to be an online tutor, don't forget that you can state on your profile that you offer tutorials via webcam. While it helps to have qualifications in your given subject and teaching experience, there aren't actually any requirements for becoming a private tutor. If you're self-taught in a given subject you can still offer tutorials.Having a lot of qualifications doesn't necessarily guarantee that you'll be a gifted tutor. You need to foster a rapport with your students, adapt your classes to their needs, and regularly monitor their progress. Students opt for tutorials because they're usually more relaxed and effective than their classes at school and that's why they pay a premium for them. You have to make sure that you're offering them value for their money, especially if you want to do this in the long term as your main job or career. If you're good at it, word will spread and the favourab le reviews on your profile will mean that students keep flocking to you. Your profile will quickly fill up with feedback and testimonials from former and current students. Potential students will see these when checking out your profile and it could make the difference between you and other similar tutors. It's important that you personalise your tutorials to each student as that's one of the main reasons people opt for private tutors. They expect the tutor to work with their strengths and weaknesses and help them develop study skills and become confident learners. Now discuss in depth the meaning and purpose of academic tutoring...

Infographic 11 Tips for Improving Your Conversational Spanish Suzy S. Whether youre learning Spanish for business or just for fun, your end goal is most likely to communicate with others not just stare at a textbook! And to do this, youll need to practice listening and talking  with real people. Here, Spanish tutor Joan B.  shares some tips, and where to find conversational Spanish lessons   Ready to start speaking in Spanish  with confidence? The following tips include  creative  ways  to practice your Spanish in social settings and in your community, with native and non-native speakers. If youve been studying Spanish but feel your conversational skills are lagging behind your understanding of grammar or your reading abilities, use these tips to  make rapid, consistent progress while simultaneously having fun! Note: These tips work for  any language youre learning. From Spanish to Japanese to French, conversation practice is key. 11 Tips for Improving Your Conversational Spanish 1. Attend social events geared toward Spanish speakers. This could be a  cultural  event, a local gallery opening of Latin American art, or a community meeting regarding an issue affecting the local Spanish-speaking community. 2. Listen to material that is casual and conversation-based. Its great to listen to newscasts, but if youd like to converse in Spanish, you can improve your comprehension of spoken Spanish by listening to podcasts and other recordings that reflect  common usage of Spanish, rather than formal spoken Spanish. (Our Spanish podcast picks here!) 3. Combine your passions. It can be hard to find time to improve your language skills when youre balancing work or school, friends, and other hobbies. So, why not combine them? If you like traveling, consider choosing a Spanish-speaking country, where you can practice your conversational skills and gain new ones. You could also consider doing volunteer or paid work in your field that would expose you to Spanish speakers. If you enjoy dining out, go out with a few friends who speak your target language and try to go the entire meal speaking in Spanish! 4. Find a language exchange partner and  work with a  tutor. Language exchanges are an excellent way to practice conversation, make a new friend, and learn all about the cultural aspects of speaking Spanish.  This is a unique way to challenge your conversational skills, as language exchange partners are usually fluent, native speakers. Keep in mind, though, if youre making grammatical mistakes, your partner may not provide corrections. Because of this,  its smart to balance your study by also  working with a private Spanish tutor. Dont let the word tutor scare you off  the great thing about private lessons is that  you can set your own specific goals! If youd prefer to spend the majority of the time practicing conversations, just let your tutor  know! Many teachers  specialize in conversational Spanish lessons. 5. Chat with a friend who is also learning the same language.   If youre more comfortable with someone familiar, try chatting with a friend who is also learning the same language! Even better, take a class together. Even if you dont live in the same city, online group classes are a great way to learn together and get structured conversation practice with  others. 6. Use online forums and communities to your advantage. The internet is full of helpful resources for language learners! The TakeLessons Blog, for example, features articles and guides from professional language tutors like myself. You can also check out forums, like WordReference.com. If you cant find the answer to your question, you can post it and get answers from native speakers and other in-the-know Spanish speakers. 7.  Set specific goals or niches youd like to focus on. Is there a certain topic  that  you would like to excel in conversationally? Identify what  interest you, then look for  resources  (or ask your tutor)  to help you build  a specific set of vocabulary. For example, if you like to discuss politics, you could read the newspaper in Spanish, follow Spanish and Latin American politicians on Twitter,  or  join a community political activist group where Spanish speakers are active. Soon youll find yourself conversing easily on a variety of topics in your niche interest! 8. Supplement real-time conversations with language-learning apps. Language-learning apps are great to use on your own and during your downtime. Some apps focus on pronunciation and conversational skills. Others include fun games that can drill vocabulary and grammar rules that youve worked on with your tutor. Here are some of our favorite apps for supplementing your conversational Spanish lessons: Duolingo Busuu Mosalingua Memrise 9. Watch films and telenovelas.   Watch classic films or catch up on your latest telenovela to hear how Spanish sounds, what vocabulary is used, and how people express themselves. Try watching  with subtitles to add another layer of reinforcement and understanding! 10. Get out in the community. Volunteer to help Spanish speakers learn English, and youll learn about Spanish sentence structure and expressions by observing the ways in which they try to express themselves in English. Your knowledge of Spanish will also help when they are searching for an expression in English, but havent learned it yet. This is just one of many ways to offer your skills as a volunteer and simultaneously improve your conversational skills. There are many opportunities for volunteering in the fields of law, social justice, nutrition, and more! 11. Host an exchange student or rent a room to a student. If you have some extra room in your apartment or house, why not host an exchange student or rent a room to a Spanish-speaking student? In addition to making some extra money, youll get  an enriching experience as you interact with your guest, learn various social customs, and engage in both Spanish and English. Your guest will appreciate your effort to learn his or her language, and you could also request that your guest does a weekly conversation hour with you in Spanish. Its a win-win!
